MPA comments on BBC Trust decision to save 6 Music

The Music Publishers Association welcomes the news that the BBC Trust has rejected the BBC Executive’s proposal to close 6 Music, but notes with disappointment its acceptance of the proposal to close the Asian Network.

MPA chief executive Stephen Navin comments,

“The decision to save 6 Music will be particularly welcomed by those young up and coming bands and songwriters to whom the station has been so important. 6 Music has provided an invaluable platform for new and independent music. The Trust is absolutely right to highlight in its interim conclusions the vital importance of maintaining the type of distinctive content which is currently available uniquely on 6 Music.

“The Trust makes specific mention of the fantastic show of public support for 6 Music that we have seen since the plans were announced. Each and every music fan who replied to the consultation, or tuned their digital radio to 6 Music, should rejoice in the knowledge that their voice has been heard.

“It is disappointing to see that the Asian Network remains earmarked for closure, and we urge the BBC to find proper prominence within its digital offering to serve the Asian community and to support Asian music and songwriters. Is not 6 Music and the Asian Network precisely what the BBC should be doing, and doing more of?”
