Issue 6, Q1 2009

Challenging… That’s probably the best way to predict the year ahead. With the global economy in meltdown and music sales dropping in two of the biggest markets that until now have proved resilient – the USA and the UK – music publishers can expect difficult times ahead.

But as our (non-scientific) survey of music publishers in this issue shows, there is the general feeling that if publishing is not recession-proof, it at least has the potential to weather the storm, thanks to a multitude of revenue streams.

In this issue we explore two streams that definitely have the potential to grow: one is the licensing of legal lyrics to online services (an old scourge of music publishers) and the other is brand association with music.

Lastly, Impact is proud to be a partner of
the inaugural International Publishing Summit
taking place in Cannes at MIDEM. Organised in
association with the International Confederation
of Music Publishers (ICMP), this initiative really
puts publishers back at the centre of gravity of
the music industry’s biggest event.
